Jungle Jims

Last week Steven, Lucy and I went to do our groceries in Jungle Jim's. We walked around there for about 2 hours and that's no wonder. Jungle Jim's is apparently the biggest grocery store in the United States. They're located in Fairfield, Ohio and I just discovered that yesterday they opened a second store in Cincinnati. Their stores are set up as a theme park with sections for countries from all over the world, they have an amazing collection of wines, fruit and vegetables and an entire bargain corner. And yes, they had Belgian stuff. Of course it was a little more expensive then in Belgium: 4 regular Duvelbottles costed about 14 bucks.

Only discovering the store's map took you 5 minutes.

Oktoberfest

This weekend we went to the Oktoberfest in Downtown Cincinnati. This is the second biggest Oktoberfest in the world, after Munich. Standing for pretzels, beer, egg rolls, funnelcakes, strudel, ... One giant carnival! Got to love it! It made me feel a little bit nostalgic about my stay in Germany.

So far so good

What's happend since we arrived in the States about a month and a week ago? First of all: we enrolled for our classes. We're happy to be in UC's Department of Architecture Art and Planning, short: DAAP. In the beginning we had to adapt again to another school, another country and try to make as many new friends as possible, which we're still trying to do. In this month we already had the chance to discover some of Cincinnati's most agreeable sides: the P&G Riverfest with beautiful fireworks, we already saw Barack Obama on his grassroots event in Eden Park and so on.

BTW: I want to broaden this blog so you won't see me writing about my studies alone any more. From now on i want to talk about the more important things in life as well: food and all things beautiful: architecture, art,....

Back on track

Hey everybody!

After having been away for exactly 3 months I'm back on track. Since a lot of people were wondering how my adventures are continuing and given the big number of followers for the Bauhaus Experience I am coming back, this time with a new name: The B. Experience.
B standing for all things B: Benoît, Belgium, Bauhaus, ...

Im no longer posting from Germany but from the United States of America this time: Cincinnati, Ohio it is. Until the end of december I'll stay here together with mr. Frederick D. and then we'll be home for Christmas. I promise I'll make more updates so keep an eye on this blog. I'll try to do some of my posts in English, some in Dutch. Tell me what language you guys love most in a comment below and then I'll see you back very soon for my first real update!

What I’ll miss about Weimar

Living in the most vivid, yet the quietest part of Weimar.

Walking across Theaterplatz and seeing tourists pose in front of Goethe and Schiller.

Going shopping and hearing the REWE-jingle, commercials for the Theaterapotheke in the Steubenstrasse  and the “reine Buttermilch von Müller in Flaschen”-song.

Nobody on Theaterplatz in the morning or when it rains, except for the early birds eating ice-cream for breakfast at Venezia.

Summa(e)ry

Nog een week en de Bauhaus experience zit er op voor mij!
Deze week was er nog de Summa(e)ry, de jaarlijkse eindejaarstentoonstelling van de Bauhaus Universität. Tijdens deze 4 dagen durende tentoonstelling presenteerden vast alle studenten één of meerdere werken. De tentoonstelling startte donderdagavond rond het hoofdgebouw met een openingsfeest, dat  tot 's morgens vroeg werd verdergezet op verschillende locaties in Weimar. Overal in de stad waren er evenementen gedurende vier dagen lang. Je kon er gewoon niet omheen in Weimar, het gebeuren lokte dan ook veel inwoners en internationale toeristen. Een impressie vind je hieronder.

De laatste maand breekt aan...

Ik blijf het herhalen, de maanden gaan zo snel. Ik zou hier eeuwig kunnen blijven, maar volgende maand al vertrek ik voor studies naar Cincinnati en thuis wachten nog wat formaliteiten op mij. Ik voel wel dat ik niet in een put zal vallen omdat ik alweer iets nieuw heb om naar uit te kijken.

Juni... vooral een maand van dingen uitwerken. De tentoonstelling, het DDR-vak, en een presentatie over de receptie van Van de Velde in België waren de voornaamste dingen waarmee ik me dan ook bezig hield. Daarbij hoorde dan ook veel werk in de bib.

De presentatie van de DDR-architectuur ging heel vlot. Ik kreeg lovende woorden van Dr. Von Engelberg en Dr. Vogel. Ik had de indruk dat ik beter voorbereid was op mijn presentatie dan sommige duitse studenten.

De eindpresentatie van de tentoonstelling verliep zeer vlot. Opnieuw heb ik goede commentaar van Dr. Norbert Korrek gekregen. Hij denkt er serieus aan om mijn ontwerp (enkele simulaties hieronder) te gebruiken voor de uiteindelijke tentoonstelling, zij het dan hier en daar wat aangepast om budgettaire redenen. Nu wacht mij nog enkel het maken van een paneel voor de grote eindejaartentoonstelling “summaery” die volgende week van start gaat en die op verschillende locaties in Weimar plaatsvindt. Mijn paneel zal in het hoofdgebouw hangen. Verder moet ik nog twee papers schrijven tegen eind juli.

Tussendoor deed ik ook wat vertaalwerk voor Dr. Korrek en pleegde ik voor hem enkele telefoontjes met archieven in Brussel en een fotoagentschap in Parijs.

Verder deed ik maandag nog een (véél te korte) dagtrip naar de Belgische ambassade in Berlijn (voor mijn internationale reispas). Deze week heb ik ook mijn laatste maand huur betaald...zucht. Morgen mijn BDAY! Thema van de bijhorende party: België.

Nee, ik heb geen heimwee :)
